History of savan month

According to Hindu customs, Sawan is the fifth month in the lunar calendar of religion, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Legend has it that the Lord drank poison in the churning of the ocean to save the world. Mythology states that Goddess Parvati stopped the poison from entering his body by holding his neck. Due to which his neck turned blue. Thus his devotees offer water from the river Ganges to help him heal.

Throughout the month, devotees observe a fast during Mondays. This is known as ‘Shravan Somwar Vrat’. They offer milk, water, and bilva leaves to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Some people also observe a fast on Tuesday, which is called ‘Mangala Gauri Vrat’. Various major Hindu festivals like Nag Panchami, Krishna Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, and Teej fall in the month of Shravan.
