Kitty O’Neil was a pioneering American stuntwoman and racer who was born on March 24, 1946 and passed away on November 2, 2018. She is known for setting multiple land speed records and performing dangerous stunts in movies and TV shows.
O’Neil was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and was deaf from the age of five months due to a fever. Despite her hearing loss, she was a skilled athlete and began water skiing competitively in her teens. She eventually became a stuntwoman and stunt driver, performing stunts in movies and TV shows such as “Wonder Woman,” “The Bionic Woman,” and “The Blues Brothers.”
O’Neil was also an accomplished racer and set numerous land speed records during her career. In 1976, she set the women’s land speed record by driving a rocket-powered vehicle at a speed of 512 miles per hour. She also set records in boats and motorcycles, and in 1979, she set a water-speed record of 275 miles per hour.
In addition to her racing and stunt work, O’Neil was also a pilot and a skydiver. She was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006 and the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2018.
Kitty O’Neil’s life and career were the subjects of the 1979 TV movie “Silent Victory: The Kitty O’Neil Story,” starring Stockard Channing. She was a trailblazer for women in both the stunt and racing industries and remains an inspiration to many.
